Comcast is laying fiber and expanding service to Griswold and Sterling.
The project will expand the company’s Internet connection and is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will provide 500 homes in Sterling and 2,200 homes and businesses in Griswold access to Xfinity and Comcast Business, the company’s press release said.
This is part of Comcast’s $400 million investment in technology and infrastructure in the state over the past three years.
“As we expand our gigabit-speed network further into Griswold and into Sterling, we bring more choices for powerful, cost-effective mobile broadband to more residents and businesses throughout New London and Windham counties, ” said Carolyne Hannan, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s New England Region, in the press release.
It’s good that Griswold is getting more internet service. As Griswold wants to attract more businesses, having more options for Internet service could help, said First Selectman Tina Falck.
“The more you have to offer, the better response you’ll get,” she said.

Xfinity service was already available in the Jewett City section of Griswold. This is also part of an expansion throughout New London County, said New England Region PR Director Elizabeth Walden.
The construction process is going well and is on schedule. Passers-by may see a technician bringing service to a home, or see someone doing stilt or underground construction. The work itself is minimally disruptive, and existing customers won’t notice a thing, Walden said.
The Griswold Public Works Department has been working with Comcast to repair disturbed lawns and other issues, Falck said.
“It’s an ongoing process,” she said.
What the road work looks like in Sterling
For Sterling, Comcast is working throughout the city on their lines, but there hasn’t been any interaction with city government. First Selectman Lincoln Cooper personally has had good Internet access through Breezeline, he said.
“I think (Comcast) made it so everybody will have it if they want it, it’s just a matter of people deciding if they want to try it,” he said.
Why the expansion is happening at Griswold and Sterlin
This expansion is based on prioritizing dense populations where the network is already close. While Comcast doesn’t know how many customers the expansion will gain, residents and businesses can visit Xfinity.com and Business.Comcast.com to see if they can access the service. Comcast will also notify customers 30 days before service goes live in an area, Walden said.
